Infertility – The behind the doors epidemic facing Men in India

people _21_

Infertility a term that is often considered taboo by men, the mere thought of it gives Indian men a cold sweat. This has led to this issue being swept under the rug more often than not, but despite it being hidden from common knowledge, it is very much an epidemic that is on the rise. A study by AIIMS, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences found that the average sperm count among Indian men has fallen from 60mn to 20mn of semen over the last three decades! In fact  while it is commonly believed that infertility is the woman’s fault, in nearly 30% of all infertility cases, the cause is a problem in the male.

It is indeed alarming how much infertility among men has increased in the last few decades, so what are the causes?

  • Smoking & drinking
  • Stress
  • Disease
  • Pesticide exposure
  • Wearing tight pants
  • Keeping laptop on your lap

These are just some of the causes for more information on the subject you can visit any of the links cited at the end of the article.

So given that infertility is quite common among men and can be caused by common aspects of our daily lives, we must ask the question, why is no one talking about it? While publications have spoken about it quiet often in recent years, men themselves keep hush on the subject. Part of this is due to society associating men’s status to fertility, this is not even an aspect of modern life but rather something that has been instilled since ancient times. It is a man’s duty to have an heir and to satisfy his wife in the sack, an inability to do that will lead to an end of his line and shame in the eyes of his friends and family. This needs to change with it becoming an increasingly common problem, men need to start opening up about these issues and they require their wives, and loved ones to support them through these difficult times. The other aspect is men themselves! Men put a lot of their self worth into their penises, they worry about every aspect of it, length, girth, look, etc. To be unable to produce healthy semen kills the make ego completely.

Most male infertility is frequently seen by society as arising from sexual dysfunction and is thus associated with higher levels of stigma than female infertility. In fact a study by Dr. Rheta Keylor of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis stated that, male infertility is an “assault on a man’s sense of self revives feelings of competition, castration, and experiences of developmental trauma.”

Given these issues and that fact that male infertility is rising, it is important for men to start talking about this problem and seeking treatment for it. It’s time we stopped associating our penises with masculinity and instead start respecting the courage it takes for a man to talk about facing infertility freely.

An Indian Man’s Guide to Pokemon Go – Part 2

Pokemon Go

Sorry for the wait folks, was out catching some Pokemon and gathering some data to share with all of you. For those who haven’t read the first part of this article, you can find it here.

How do you catch Pokemon in Pokemon Go?

Catching Pokemon in Pokemon Go is different from the Gameboy game, in the sense that in Pokemon Go you simply have to throw a Pokeball at the Pokemon, there is no weakening of the Pokemon by attacking it with your existing Pokemon. You can however use berries to put the Pokemon in a false calm so that they become easier to capture. You must throw the Pokeball right at the Pokemon and hit them, throwing it anywhere near them won’t cut it. (Pro tip- Turning off AR makes it easier)

Ash.gif

What is Incense? and how do i use it?

Using Incense is basically a hack for lazy people (such as myself) to catch Pokemon without walking around too much. Incense can be activated by going to your items and selecting it. Every trainer starts with 2, but you can on occasion find them at Pokestops and buy them with Pokecoins. Once you activate it, you should have 5-6 Pokemon appear infront of you in a period of 30 mins. Some say this attracts rare Pokemon too but I haven’t seen any empirical evidence of that yet.

What are the three different teams in Pokemon Go?

The first thing to note is that much like gyms, you can only choose a team on reaching level 5. There are three teams, each one with one of the legendary birds as its mascot. The teams are-

  • Team Mystic– The Mascot for this team is Articuno, led by Professor Willow’s assistant Blanche, they believe in calm analysis.
  • Team Instinct– The Mascot for this team is Zapdos, Led by another of Professor Willow’s assistants, who is thematically named Spark, they believe in trusting in your Pokemon’s instincts
  • Team Valor– The Mascot for our third and final team is none other than Moltres, led by yet another of Professor Willow’s assistants Candela, they favor true strength and training.

You can only choose your team once and there is currently no option to change teams, so select your mascot wisely.

How do i raise the level of my Pokemon?

The two major stats to focus on in Pokemon Go are the Pokemon’s Combat points or CP and it’s Hit Points or HP. CP refers to the amount of damage a Pokemon can do, whereas HP refers to the amount of damage it can take. Luckily both these levels raise simultaneously when you use Stardust (Which you receive, when you catch a Pokemon) and Candies which are Pokemon or evolution line specific. To get these candies you must catch the same Pokemon multiple times.

How do i get a great ball or an ultra ball?

Great balls and Ultra balls which are a lot stronger than normal Pokeballs will become available to users at Pokestops once they reach level 11.

Where are all the legendary Pokemon?

Just like in the game boy games, everyone wants to catch a legendary Pokemon. As of now legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go refer to Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno, Mew and Mewtwo. While a lot of people have claimed to see these Pokemon, I have seen no photos or screenshots to prove it. These Pokemon will probably be given out at special events hosted by Nintendo, which will most likely take a long time to take place in India, sorry lads!

That’s a wrap folks you now know everything to start on your Pokemon journey! Happy Pokemon Training!

An Indian Man’s Guide to Pokemon Go – Part 1

Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go! The internet has been blowing up about this augmented reality game for the last week. This has led to a lot of people wondering what the hell the game is? Well lucky for you lads we’re bringing you a guide to this Nostalgia evoking wonder.

What is Pokemon?

Are you really going to make me answer that?  Don’t you remember the Trading cards, the game boy games and of course the cartoon (That used to come at 5:30pm every weekday). And what does Pokemon Go Involve?

Pokemon Go literally tries to bring Pokemon alive in the real world though augmented reality. The game is played on Android and IOS handheld devices (Suck it Microsoft) . Through GPS locations and a whole lot of other fancy tech, the game generates Pokemon around you based on a number of factors including the environment/surrounding, for example you’ll find water type Pokemon by water bodies such as lakes and bug Pokemon in the grass. So in essence you land up walking a lot to find different Pokemon.

What is the objective of Pokemon Go

Well simply put you ‘Gotta Catch em all’. At the moment the game has 250 Pokemon, though this will probably keep growing as there are currently 750+ Pokemon in the franchise.

Does Pokemon Go  have gyms?

You bet they do, though unlike the Gameboy games and cartoon series there are gym leaders, in Pokemon Go other groups of trainers own gyms. Once you reach level 5, you get to join a group. As part of this group you can challenge other gyms and even leave one of your Pokemon to protect the gym (This earns you the in game currency – Pokecoins). You can learn more about this here http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-video-games/pokemon-go/

How do I start playing the game?

When you first download the game, you’ll have to login though a Google account and pick your in game avatar. There are a few options in terms of clothes, hair styles, skin color, etc so make sure to choose a combination you feel looks good. Then comes the time all young Pokemon trainers love – Picking your starter Pokemon! You can pick between Bulbasur – A classic grass type Pokemon, Squirtle – A turtle resembling water type Pokemon and Charmander – The cute but fierce fire style Pokemon. Once you choose your set to walk around endlessly searching for Pokemon!

Pokemon Kanto Starters.png

Has it launched in India?

Nope, unfortunately we are late to the party. Reports suggest that it will release officially in Asia within the month but nothing is confirmed as of this time. Ofcourse there are some not so legal ways to download it, but we’ll leave that to your discretion.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this article, coming soon.

Ever wondered what girls think of AWKWARD guy problems? Find out

It may come as a surprise to a lot of women but guys have problems too! This hilarious video shines a light on the misconceptions and biased against men’s ‘Awkward’ issues (These awkward issues including everything from morning wood to thinning hair). Though quiet enjoyable to watch this video does show one thing that is quiet sad, the depiction of a guy crying gets a lot of ridicule from the girls, with one girl even saying “Come on go deal with it, You are the men”. In an age where we want men to embrace their emotional side, those kind of views are probably not the greatest, though one girl does give an interesting idea to bridge the cap in an understanding between men and women’s issues, she suggests “I think there should be a meeting where we guys and girls can get drunk and discuss”, I for one second that idea! Check out the video below and tell us what you think in the comments section below

Why the relationship between a father and son is so special

silhouette-1082129_960_720

A father is a key figure in the growth of any man. He was there when you rode your first bike, when you broke up with your first girlfriend and through other torrid times. Our fathers might be strict, they might be old fashioned and might not always be the best listeners, but they sure as hell are our first heroes.

From the day we are born he is our very own superman, no he doesn’t wear a cape- but more often than not he wears a suit and works himself to the bone to provide for you. In our little eyes he could do anything and fix anything from our toys to our mistakes. Though fathers are far from invincible they never let us see it, shielding us from their troubles. Sure they might miss out on a few cricket matches, school award ceremonies and other functions, but they are thinking about their children the whole time, while stuck at work.

Some of us let our relationships with our fathers sour with time, the reasons for this vary, perhaps it was because they didn’t spend enough time with us growing up, or because they didn’t support our career choices. We often come back from those problems, but very often pride gets in the way. Don’t wait for it to be too late, go bury the hatchet, because in life you’ll have many friends, girlfriends and jobs but you’ll only have one father.

One day, you’ll have your own child, and that day you’ll truly understand your father and the pressures he faced. You’ll make mistakes but just remember all father’s do and it’s never too late to do better. Our fathers taught us how to navigate the world and we will do the same for our children. A father is truly an unsung hero.

Happy Father’s Day

An historic judgement for men! Male students can now file sexual harassment cases

Guilty Until Proven Innocent(1)

In what is definitely welcomed news, the University Grants Commission (UGC) launched new regulations which allow male students to file cases of sexual harassment against men, women and transgender people.

The UGC recently told higher education institutes ‘act decisively against all gender based violence perpetrated against employees and students of all sexes recognising that primarily women employees and students and some male students and students of the third gender are vulnerable to many forms of sexual harassment and humiliation and exploitation’. Delving further into some of the intricate details of the regulation reveals the procedure to file complaints, here are some of the finer points –

  • The victim must file a complaint with the internal complaints committee (of their university) within 3 months of the incident, notwithstanding any major illness which prevented them from doing so
  • Alternately a third party can also file a complaint for the victim. This can be a family member, friend, colleague, classmate or any other associate. They can file the complaint if the victim is unable to do so due to “physical or mental incapacity or death”
  • The internal complaints committee must complete their investigation within 90 days and authorities must take action 30 days after receiving this report.
  • If found guilty a student will be expelled and teachers will be liable and processed according to service rules.

Now I know what you’re thinking shouldn’t this law have always been there? Well sadly the matter of men getting sexually harassed has been long overlooked, due to a number of reasons including the fact that people assume men don’t get harassed sexually. This is partly because men mostly don’t file complaints for sexual harassment out of fear of being ridiculed by society (Because apparently it’s not manly to be sexually assaulted). This law will hopefully serve as a stepping stone for removing the stigma around the issue.

6 kinds of footwear every man needs

shoes-107400_1280

Being picky about your footwear used to be considered ‘unmanly’, but in recent years with minds being a bit more open and metro sexuality being welcomed shoes have become a man’s appearance signature. With appropriate footwear now being a norm, selection of appropriate footwear for every occasion has become a headache that all men must deal with. To make this task easier, we bring you the Indian Mans Den’s list of footwear every man needs:

  1. Casual Sneakers

The casual sneaker has become the sort of shoe that can be worn on almost all occasion (If the shoe is maintained well). The right pair of sneakers can go a long way in diversifying your wardrobe. (Pro tip – White sneakers will go with pretty much anything). Grab an amazing pair and make sure to treat them like the piece of art they are.

Sneakers.jpg

  1. Gym Sneakers

In recent years, people have made the mistake of using their casual sneakers as gym sneakers. That is a big no no. Your gym sneakers don’t need to be Adidas or Nike, even local brands will do the job as long as they provide the stability needed to maintain ones balance during a good lift. (Pro tip- Don’t buy a pair that you need to break in, a gym sneaker should be comfortable off the bat)

Gym shoes.jpg

  1. Loafers

Whatever you believe of their origins (Let’s face it there are a lot of theories) loafers have picked up steam in the fashion world, while dividing camps on their ‘formality’. Whatever the case the loafer is a great shoe for everyday wear. Not to mention it is a great look for a brunch or lunch date. When selecting a loafer please ensure it’s one built of good quality leather and ensure to maintain it (Since you won’t be wearing socks).

Loafers.jpg

  1. Boots

Boots aren’t just the style of cowboys and hikers anymore! Boots have become highly versatile in their usage. Whether you’re a chukka guy or a Chelsea guy (like me) owning a pair is a must. Boots are great for winter use, pair them with black track pants or blue jeans for the beat results and throw on a black leather jacket for an ensemble that will leave the ladies staring.

  1. Dress Shoes

While I know the term ‘Dress Shoes’ is very broad, for the purpose of this article they mean only one thing – Oxfords! Not Brogues, not wingtips, just classic oxfords. No self-respecting working man can meander through life without a solid pair of oxfords. No matter how good your suit, a bad pair of formal shoes will immediately make you look like an uncultured buffoon. Spend big on this one lads, one good pair will give you a lot of mileage.

Oxfords Paul Smith

  1. Flip Flops

Who doesn’t want to liberate their feet! This one is a hit among the Indian youth. So much better looking than the ugly sandles we all wore growing up, a nice pair of flip flops is a sure hit for a casual day of hanging with the boys at the café. However, one major error that people make is wearing flip flops out and about on formal occasions – It is NOT even remotely formal.

An Indian Man’s Guide to Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker Collections

We all love our Johnnie Walker whisky, in fact it’s probably safe to say that anyone who drinks has probably hung out with good old John at least a few times. However, how many of us understand the heritage of this iconic brand? and how many really know the difference between the different kinds of Johnnie Walker?

A brief history of Johnnie Walker

The brand had humble beginnings. Started in 1820 by a young John Walker out of a grocers shop in the small but thriving local town of Kilmarnock in Scotland. John loved whisky and used to stock Single Malts in his shop. But one thing about Single Malts of the time irritated him. They were never all that consistent, meaning the bottle of whiskey you so enjoyed a day ago, could taste completely different the next time you purchased it.

So to solve this problem, John created his own blend of scotch and the rest as they say is history. Below is everything casual drinkers need to know about the different types of Johnnie Walker. Those who want more information can feel free to follow the sources cited at the end of the article.

Red Label

The top selling scotch whiskey from across the world, Red label is the perfect bottle for all those who like to indulge in a post work drink (And don’t want to go broke).  Highly versatile and with universal appeal, it has a bold, characterful flavor that shines through even when mixed. This is probably the only Johnnie Walker blend that you can have with coke without facing the ire of connoisseurs.

Johnnie Walker Red

Black Label

The life of every fancy Indian wedding, Black Label is one of the most renowned Whiskies in the world and often considered better than many of its more expensive counterparts.  Created using only whiskies aged for a minimum of 12 years from the four corners of Scotland, Johnnie Walker Black Label has an unmistakably smooth, deep, complex character. The beautiful hint of smokiness in Black Label is definitely something everyone loves.

Johnnie Walker Black

Double Black

The successor to Black Label, launched to the larger public in 2013. Taking Black label as a blue print and adding heavily peated malts and some aged in deeply charred oak casks. This whisky is a must have for anyone who prefers a smokier whisky. An impressive whisky to have indeed.

Johnnie Walker Double Black

Green Label

Crafted from a palette of Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Island malts and matured for at least 15 years, it delivers all the character of a single malt whisky, but with a greater depth of flavor. Each malt whisky that is blended has been aged for a minimum of 15 years. Arguably the most underrated of the family, Green label is a drink to be enjoyed when looking to unwind on vacation.

Johnnie Walker Green.jpg

Gold Label Reserve

The successor to Gold Label, Gold Label reserve is often looked at as a no age statement version of Gold Label. If you like sweet whisky I feel you will definitely enjoy Gold Label. The best occasion for opening one of these bad boys is on a bachelor party or boys trip. This drink would probably be one of the best scotches in town if it packed a bit more of a punch in the alcohol content section.

Johnnie Walker Gold.jpg

Platinum Label

Any malt that is 18 years of age is going to be amazing and Platinum label is no exception to that rule. A very rich and full bodied whisky, this the perfect gift to a girl’s father. Like with most other Johnnie Walkers using mixers with this one is a big no no and will butcher the exceptional taste of the whisky. What makes it different from a lot of the other whiskies in the family is the spice and heat of the grain whisky.

Johnnie Walker Platinum

Blue Label

Finally down to our last entry in the Johnnie Walker family. There is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said about the top dog in the family. Also known as Max Walker, this whisky looks to recreate the magic of the earliest 19th century blends. According to the Johnnie Walker website “Only one in every ten thousand casks has the elusive quality, character and flavour to deliver the’ remarkable signature taste of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.” So make sure that you save this Whisky for the rarest of occasions.

Johnnie Walker Blue.jpg

So now you’re in the know, go pick up a nice bottle of Johnnie Walker (any color) and examine the taste and enjoy the masterclass blending that makes this whisky so special and perhaps impress your date with your knowledge.

The Tanmay Bhat Rant on Feminism – An Indian Man’s Take

“If you believe men and women should have equal rights that makes you a feminist. That’s it. There’s nothing else.” – Tanmay Bhat

In a video that has gone viral, Tanmay Bhat of AIB fame, rants about feminism or rather how it is being perceived in the public domain. For the most part he makes some great points including his definition of feminism – Any person who believes in equal rights for both genders is a feminist. I couldn’t agree more. According to me, this rant by Mr Bhat, was directed towards women more than men. It was focused on taking the focus of feminism away from the more extreme faction of self – proclaimed feminists or ‘Feminazis’ as they are popularly known and to instead realize that we all want the same thing – equality.

I really enjoyed this video and don’t think that any man should be offended by this. He puts forward a very basic and correct hypothesis. So more power to you Tanmay! Keep fighting the good fight for gender equality and we’ll do the same.

So what did you think? Do you agree with Tanmay Bhat? Disagree? Or Agree on just some points? Let us know in the comments below
