An Indian Man’s Guide to Pokemon Go – Part 2

Sorry for the wait folks, was out catching some Pokemon and gathering some data to share with all of you. For those who haven’t read the first part of this article, you can find it here.

How do you catch Pokemon in Pokemon Go?

Catching Pokemon in Pokemon Go is different from the Gameboy game, in the sense that in Pokemon Go you simply have to throw a Pokeball at the Pokemon, there is no weakening of the Pokemon by attacking it with your existing Pokemon. You can however use berries to put the Pokemon in a false calm so that they become easier to capture. You must throw the Pokeball right at the Pokemon and hit them, throwing it anywhere near them won’t cut it. (Pro tip- Turning off AR makes it easier)

What is Incense? and how do i use it?

Using Incense is basically a hack for lazy people (such as myself) to catch Pokemon without walking around too much. Incense can be activated by going to your items and selecting it. Every trainer starts with 2, but you can on occasion find them at Pokestops and buy them with Pokecoins. Once you activate it, you should have 5-6 Pokemon appear infront of you in a period of 30 mins. Some say this attracts rare Pokemon too but I haven’t seen any empirical evidence of that yet.

What are the three different teams in Pokemon Go?

The first thing to note is that much like gyms, you can only choose a team on reaching level 5. There are three teams, each one with one of the legendary birds as its mascot. The teams are-

  • Team Mystic– The Mascot for this team is Articuno, led by Professor Willow’s assistant Blanche, they believe in calm analysis.
  • Team Instinct– The Mascot for this team is Zapdos, Led by another of Professor Willow’s assistants, who is thematically named Spark, they believe in trusting in your Pokemon’s instincts
  • Team Valor– The Mascot for our third and final team is none other than Moltres, led by yet another of Professor Willow’s assistants Candela, they favor true strength and training.

You can only choose your team once and there is currently no option to change teams, so select your mascot wisely.

How do i raise the level of my Pokemon?

The two major stats to focus on in Pokemon Go are the Pokemon’s Combat points or CP and it’s Hit Points or HP. CP refers to the amount of damage a Pokemon can do, whereas HP refers to the amount of damage it can take. Luckily both these levels raise simultaneously when you use Stardust (Which you receive, when you catch a Pokemon) and Candies which are Pokemon or evolution line specific. To get these candies you must catch the same Pokemon multiple times.

How do i get a great ball or an ultra ball?

Great balls and Ultra balls which are a lot stronger than normal Pokeballs will become available to users at Pokestops once they reach level 11.

Where are all the legendary Pokemon?

Just like in the game boy games, everyone wants to catch a legendary Pokemon. As of now legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go refer to Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno, Mew and Mewtwo. While a lot of people have claimed to see these Pokemon, I have seen no photos or screenshots to prove it. These Pokemon will probably be given out at special events hosted by Nintendo, which will most likely take a long time to take place in India, sorry lads!

That’s a wrap folks you now know everything to start on your Pokemon journey! Happy Pokemon Training!

And what does Pokemon Go Involve?

Pokemon Go literally tries to bring Pokemon alive in the real world though augmented reality. The game is played on Android and IOS handheld devices (Suck it Microsoft) . Through GPS locations and a whole lot of other fancy tech, the game generates Pokemon around you based on a number of factors including the environment/surrounding, for example you’ll find water type Pokemon by water bodies such as lakes and bug Pokemon in the grass. So in essence you land up walking a lot to find different Pokemon.

What is the objective of Pokemon Go

Well simply put you ‘Gotta Catch em all’. At the moment the game has 250 Pokemon, though this will probably keep growing as there are currently 750+ Pokemon in the franchise.

Does Pokemon Go  have gyms?

You bet they do, though unlike the Gameboy games and cartoon series there are gym leaders, in Pokemon Go other groups of trainers own gyms. Once you reach level 5, you get to join a group. As part of this group you can challenge other gyms and even leave one of your Pokemon to protect the gym (This earns you the in game currency – Pokecoins). You can learn more about this here

How do I start playing the game?

When you first download the game, you’ll have to login though a Google account and pick your in game avatar. There are a few options in terms of clothes, hair styles, skin color, etc so make sure to choose a combination you feel looks good. Then comes the time all young Pokemon trainers love – Picking your starter Pokemon! You can pick between Bulbasur – A classic grass type Pokemon, Squirtle – A turtle resembling water type Pokemon and Charmander – The cute but fierce fire style Pokemon. Once you choose your set to walk around endlessly searching for Pokemon!

Has it launched in India?

Nope, unfortunately we are late to the party. Reports suggest that it will release officially in Asia within the month but nothing is confirmed as of this time. Ofcourse there are some not so legal ways to download it, but we’ll leave that to your discretion.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this article, coming soon.

Why the relationship between a father and son is so special

A father is a key figure in the growth of any man. He was there when you rode your first bike, when you broke up with your first girlfriend and through other torrid times. Our fathers might be strict, they might be old fashioned and might not always be the best listeners, but they sure as hell are our first heroes.

From the day we are born he is our very own superman, no he doesn’t wear a cape- but more often than not he wears a suit and works himself to the bone to provide for you. In our little eyes he could do anything and fix anything from our toys to our mistakes. Though fathers are far from invincible they never let us see it, shielding us from their troubles. Sure they might miss out on a few cricket matches, school award ceremonies and other functions, but they are thinking about their children the whole time, while stuck at work.

Some of us let our relationships with our fathers sour with time, the reasons for this vary, perhaps it was because they didn’t spend enough time with us growing up, or because they didn’t support our career choices. We often come back from those problems, but very often pride gets in the way. Don’t wait for it to be too late, go bury the hatchet, because in life you’ll have many friends, girlfriends and jobs but you’ll only have one father.

One day, you’ll have your own child, and that day you’ll truly understand your father and the pressures he faced. You’ll make mistakes but just remember all father’s do and it’s never too late to do better. Our fathers taught us how to navigate the world and we will do the same for our children. A father is truly an unsung hero.

Happy Father’s Day

An Indian Man’s Guide to Johnnie Walker

We all love our Johnnie Walker whisky, in fact it’s probably safe to say that anyone who drinks has probably hung out with good old John at least a few times. However, how many of us understand the heritage of this iconic brand? and how many really know the difference between the different kinds of Johnnie Walker?

A brief history of Johnnie Walker

The brand had humble beginnings. Started in 1820 by a young John Walker out of a grocers shop in the small but thriving local town of Kilmarnock in Scotland. John loved whisky and used to stock Single Malts in his shop. But one thing about Single Malts of the time irritated him. They were never all that consistent, meaning the bottle of whiskey you so enjoyed a day ago, could taste completely different the next time you purchased it.

So to solve this problem, John created his own blend of scotch and the rest as they say is history. Below is everything casual drinkers need to know about the different types of Johnnie Walker. Those who want more information can feel free to follow the sources cited at the end of the article.

Red Label

The top selling scotch whiskey from across the world, Red label is the perfect bottle for all those who like to indulge in a post work drink (And don’t want to go broke).  Highly versatile and with universal appeal, it has a bold, characterful flavor that shines through even when mixed. This is probably the only Johnnie Walker blend that you can have with coke without facing the ire of connoisseurs.

Johnnie Walker Red

Black Label

The life of every fancy Indian wedding, Black Label is one of the most renowned Whiskies in the world and often considered better than many of its more expensive counterparts.  Created using only whiskies aged for a minimum of 12 years from the four corners of Scotland, Johnnie Walker Black Label has an unmistakably smooth, deep, complex character. The beautiful hint of smokiness in Black Label is definitely something everyone loves.

Johnnie Walker Black

Double Black

The successor to Black Label, launched to the larger public in 2013. Taking Black label as a blue print and adding heavily peated malts and some aged in deeply charred oak casks. This whisky is a must have for anyone who prefers a smokier whisky. An impressive whisky to have indeed.

Johnnie Walker Double Black

Green Label

Crafted from a palette of Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Island malts and matured for at least 15 years, it delivers all the character of a single malt whisky, but with a greater depth of flavor. Each malt whisky that is blended has been aged for a minimum of 15 years. Arguably the most underrated of the family, Green label is a drink to be enjoyed when looking to unwind on vacation.

Johnnie Walker Green.jpg

Gold Label Reserve

The successor to Gold Label, Gold Label reserve is often looked at as a no age statement version of Gold Label. If you like sweet whisky I feel you will definitely enjoy Gold Label. The best occasion for opening one of these bad boys is on a bachelor party or boys trip. This drink would probably be one of the best scotches in town if it packed a bit more of a punch in the alcohol content section.

Johnnie Walker Gold.jpg

Platinum Label

Any malt that is 18 years of age is going to be amazing and Platinum label is no exception to that rule. A very rich and full bodied whisky, this the perfect gift to a girl’s father. Like with most other Johnnie Walkers using mixers with this one is a big no no and will butcher the exceptional taste of the whisky. What makes it different from a lot of the other whiskies in the family is the spice and heat of the grain whisky.

Johnnie Walker Platinum

Blue Label

Finally down to our last entry in the Johnnie Walker family. There is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said about the top dog in the family. Also known as Max Walker, this whisky looks to recreate the magic of the earliest 19th century blends. According to the Johnnie Walker website “Only one in every ten thousand casks has the elusive quality, character and flavour to deliver the’ remarkable signature taste of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.” So make sure that you save this Whisky for the rarest of occasions.

Johnnie Walker Blue.jpg

So now you’re in the know, go pick up a nice bottle of Johnnie Walker (any color) and examine the taste and enjoy the masterclass blending that makes this whisky so special and perhaps impress your date with your knowledge.

An Indian man’s guide to tipping

Lads, I hate to break it to you but tipping is important. In India, about 40% of the population doesn’t tip & a good 20% probably tip way too much in the hopes of showing off (you know who you are) or getting some kind of special service. The rest are confused about how much of a tip is appropriate. We here at the Indian Man’s Den understand this problem and through research and a few embarrassing tipping experiences bring you our guide to tipping in India.

The appropriate amount is usually about 10% of the bill. This however depends on the service, if there is a fly in your food no tip is probably required but on the other hand a slightly higher tip of 15-20% is appropriate if the service staff have gone out of the way to make your night special.

Delivery Boys

Once again depending on the service the tip should range from anything between 10-20%. No need to tip if he shows up 3 hours late with a cold pizza

Your barber is someone you probably want to keep on your good side (Unless you want to look like a villain from a horror film), and for that reason it’s wise to tip them a slightly higher amount of say 15-25%. This is especially true for low end barbers, who charge 50 to 100 rupees for a haircut. Tip right and you will always have sublime hair.

I know you don’t need to tip you maid, but what I mean here is her bonus. It’s socially expected and probably fair that you give your maid a bonus for holidays like Diwali and Holi. There is no common number for this, but to stay on the safe side you should probably give her about 25-50% of her monthly salary. Way higher than the rest of the list, we know but it’s worth it. Finding a new maid is a hassle.

You know all those nights you decide to go drinking, and just figure “Hey, my driver can wait for me”. Well you kind of need to pay him for that. The tip completely depends on how late you’re going to be. Our recommendation would be a simple Rs 50 to 100 per hour + some money to eat & have chai.

Bellhops need to be tipped, not tipping a bellhop is very much frowned upon. I mean for god sake they do carry massive bags for you! If you’re in India I’d say Rs 50 in a 3 Star or below and Rs 100- 200 in a 4/5 star. There is no need to give more than that, unless you’re a schmuck.

Fell wiser yet. We know parting with money sucks, but tipping is a big part of a lot of service people’s livelihoods. Tipping will also ensure that no one spits in your food. Let us know if you want us to go over tipping for any other professions in the comments section below.

Here is why the relationship between an Indian man and his mother is special

The relationship between a mother and her son is special and I don’t mean in a Freudian way but in a beautiful and mind baffling way. Every boy grows up with this mother being his first friend, companion and guardian (That never changes). Let’s explore this bond a bit further.

There is no psychological or rational way to explain a mother’s undying love for her child. Remember all those nights you were ill and she stayed up through the night to take care of you or when she slogged through the day to help you finish your homework. Mother’s never think twice about spending their time taking care of you. No matter what she might be going through, she will always put your needs first; For example, She will sell her jewelry to pay for you education if need be and makes sure to that you have eaten, even if she hasn’t. Why? Because she believes in and loves you, more than anyone else in the world does. No matter how crazy your dreams seem, she will be the first person to support you and advocate that you are capable of anything!

Mother and son.jpg

This relationship changes as we grow up, move out and get married but the foundation always remains the same. No matter how good our wife cooks or how well we learn to cook, the best food will always be ‘Maa ke haat ka’ (Translation: Made by mother’s hands). She will still worry sick about your diet, career and happiness in general. That is what Mother’s do, they love us from the day they conceive us till the day they depart this plane of existence.

So go give your mother a tight hug and tell her how much she means to you, that will mean more to her than anything, and when she gets old be there for her as she was for you throughout your life. She deserves no less than your love, support and respect because as the old saying goes “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”

Happy Mother’s Day

The end of Playboy as we know it and what it means for men’s magazines

As most of you may have heard, Playboy is on sale for $500 Million, this includes the magazine, cable network, licensing rights and even the Playboy mansion. So if you have a cool half a billion feel free to pick it up and invite me for a kickass party.

The sale of Playboy marks the end of an era, Playboy has been an icon of male culture and lifestyle for the better part of the 20th century. Started in 1953 by Hugh Hefner from his dining table, Playboy has been a mainstay of many men’s lives.

This article is not to report the news its sale nor to discuss Playboy’s legacy, I’m sure enough blogs and papers will cover that. What I would like to discuss is how this signals a change in the way male magazines and portals are viewed. The advent of Playboy led to a seismic shift in how men’s magazine’s operated, while before playboy there were some magazine’s that featured nude people (men & women), these were nudist magazines and often featured less than ideal looking individuals. Playboy on the other hand featured a lot of beautiful models nude, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why they succeeded.

The company is today a licensing juggernaut with deos, jewellery and much much more featuring its iconic logo or name. It has Playboy TV and ofcourse the mansion which has held many legendary Hollywood parties over the years. Despite this Playboy is not doing so well and has seen a drop in revenues in the last decade.

The biggest challenge for Playboy has without a doubt been the advent of internet porn, why would anyone go out and purchase a magazine when they can see all the nude women they want online for free? So Playboy had to change their strategy. In all fairness to them they have done that, As of March 2016 Playboy no longer features nude women. What does this mean?

Well it suggests a welcomed change in what men’s publications do. Till date they all focused majorly on one thing- SEX. I’m not saying that is not important, we ourselves plan to work towards helping men become better at it, respect it and understand the emotions behind it and there are a number of publications that do the same. What will decline however is the focus on “Nude magazines”, more and more publishers are set to focus on advising men, helping men understand their role in an ever changing society and just improving men’s lives.

So don’t fret about the end of Playboy as we know it, there is always porn (Like you didn’t know that) if you want to see women you can never have strip down! Instead welcome the fact that we are entering a new era that will be better. No matter what we will always have the larger than life aspirations that Playboy and Hugh Hefner left us all with, which will probably outlive even Hef himself.

Want to know what International Women’s Day is? Here is a cheat sheet

No it is not an Archie’s holiday, it’s not a holiday that is looking to make you buy gifts for your girlfriend or your mother. It is part of a much larger movement that started a century ago! To help all of you lovely people out there I have done the research and got everything about IWD you need to know below.

It all started in the early 20th century women’s jobs were mainly sex segregated, wages were horrible and working conditions even worse. We were at the cusp of Union movements, and women supported men immensely in their efforts to unionize, but after sometime they realized that their issues were not being brought up by men(We were kind of busy with our own fight). This led to some brave women starting their own unions and fighting for their rights. An abridged timeline for the events that followed is below (Timeline taken from the IWD website)

  • In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
  • In 1909, the first National Woman’s Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February.
  • In 1910, A woman named Clara Zetkin tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day. The suggestion was greeted with unanimous approval and thus International Women’s Day was established.
  • In 1911, International Women’s Day was honored for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March.
  • In 1975, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations.
  • In 1977, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by its Member States.
  • In 2001, The global digital hub for everything IWD was launched to re-energize the day as an important platform to celebrate the successful achievements of women.

OK now that you understand the historical context, let’s talk about why it matters in 2016.

As much as we dislike and try to stop it the fact remains women are discriminated against not in same way the early 1900s but still discriminated against. IWD is an important platform for women to discuss this and to address gender parity. Gender Parity is calculated as the quotient of the number of women by the number of men enrolled in education institutes (I Googled it).

Since 1996, each year has had a theme. This year’s theme is “Step It up for Gender Parity” and you can participate in the conversation by using the hashtag #PledgeForParity. You can also simply sign the pledge to help achieve gender parity by following the link, but more importantly make a conscious choice to ensure that every man you know respects women and shows them their valued. At the end of the day if we want women to respect us, we must respect them too and showing support for International Women’s Day is just one way of doing that. I will leave you with words on the matter from our President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee

“On the occasion of International Womens Day, I extend warm greetings and good wishes to the women of India and thank them for their contributions over the years in the building of our nation.

Women have always been given the highest level of respect in our country. Their protection and safety is a sacred duty of society as a whole. We must respect the right of women to equal opportunities and a dignified life. We have a collective responsibility to create an ecosystem that ensures the safety, security and dignity of women in society.

On International Womens Day, let us redouble our efforts for achieving gender equity and empowerment of women. Let us strive to enable our women realize their full potential and participate meaningfully in all aspects of our country’s development”.

What every man can learn from Leonardo DiCaprio

Yessssss! Leo Freaking won an Oscar! To honor the situation I wanted to highlight some things every Indian man can learn from this absolute legend. While I’m sure there are a lot I want to focus on just four (No that’s not because I’m too lazy to right more)

  1. It’s not where you come from that matters: Before Leo became a teen heartthrob, he was the son of parents who divorced when he was at the tender age of 1. After his parents split, Leo stayed with his mother who worked several jobs to put food on the table for him. A few years later this same dude was making millions so next time someone tells you they can’t make it because they grew up poor, tell them to man up.

Leo Money.gif

  1. It’s not always about the money, sometimes you got to do things you love: Despite being one of the most successful movie stars on the planet, Leonardo in his post Titantic career has never focused on doing roles that are populist but rather he did roles that he is passionate about. I mean the guy turned down playing Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars! In an Interview shortly after Titantic he was quoted as saying “I’ll never reach that state of popularity again, and I don’t expect to. It’s not something I’m going to try to achieve either.”

Leo Hmm

  1. It’s important to have some fun in life: Leo is never one to shy away from a good time, whether he is vaping at an award show or at the beach with a bunch of super models, he knows how to get loose. Also before we forget to mention it, didn’t he just have a fling with Rihanna? Ah Leo keep being the Lad king you are

Leo Running.jpg

  1. Never give up, your dream will come true eventually: It took six nominations for Leo to realize his dream of winning an Academy award. He came close on many occasions, such as his role in the much acclaimed Blood Diamond or who his Bro-some (Bro+Awesome) portrayal of the disgraced stock broker Jordan Belford. Despite the whole internet on many occasions doubting it would ever happen, he finally overcame and proved that with dedication your dreams can come true!

Have trouble tying a tie knot? Try one of these 4 knots to make your life more stylish

Men look good in suits and ties look good on suits, hence every man should know how to tie a kickass tie knot (And they said I was bad at math). While in your adolescent years it was alright to have your father make the knot for you or have a classmate do it, but once you start working it is essential to know a few good knots. Luckily for us there a number of YouTube videos explaining how and because I love you all I have compiled a list of 4 tie knots that look good and are easy to get a hang of

1. The Windsor knot
Also called the Full Windsor or the Double Windsor to distinguish it from the half-Windsor. It is known for producing a symmetrical triangular knot. It’s such a distinguished knot that it is named after the Duke of Windsor (Don’t ask me which Duke of Windsor). Works exceptionally well on guys sporting a bit of facial hair.

2. The Merovingian knot
Also known as the Ediety knot, this knot has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in previous years due to it being worn by Lambert Wilson’s character in the Matrix trilogy, that character as you might have guessed was called ‘The Merovingian’

3. The Eldredge knot
Invented by a man named Jeffrey Eldredge in 2007. The Eldredge knot is the most complicated one on the list for the simple reason that it involves a crazy number of different steps. This knot will definitely impress at interviews and dates.

4. Four-in-hand knot
Also known as a simple knot or schoolboy knot, this knot is simplicity at its best. However, I am not going to show you the easy way of doing this. Here is super awesome way of tying a Four-in-hand knot that is going to be a pretty good party trick to have.
