6 kinds of footwear every man needs

Being picky about your footwear used to be considered ‘unmanly’, but in recent years with minds being a bit more open and metro sexuality being welcomed shoes have become a man’s appearance signature. With appropriate footwear now being a norm, selection of appropriate footwear for every occasion has become a headache that all men must deal with. To make this task easier, we bring you the Indian Mans Den’s list of footwear every man needs:

  1. Casual Sneakers

The casual sneaker has become the sort of shoe that can be worn on almost all occasion (If the shoe is maintained well). The right pair of sneakers can go a long way in diversifying your wardrobe. (Pro tip – White sneakers will go with pretty much anything). Grab an amazing pair and make sure to treat them like the piece of art they are.

  1. Gym Sneakers

In recent years, people have made the mistake of using their casual sneakers as gym sneakers. That is a big no no. Your gym sneakers don’t need to be Adidas or Nike, even local brands will do the job as long as they provide the stability needed to maintain ones balance during a good lift. (Pro tip- Don’t buy a pair that you need to break in, a gym sneaker should be comfortable off the bat)

  1. Loafers

Whatever you believe of their origins (Let’s face it there are a lot of theories) loafers have picked up steam in the fashion world, while dividing camps on their ‘formality’. Whatever the case the loafer is a great shoe for everyday wear. Not to mention it is a great look for a brunch or lunch date. When selecting a loafer please ensure it’s one built of good quality leather and ensure to maintain it (Since you won’t be wearing socks).

  1. Boots

Boots aren’t just the style of cowboys and hikers anymore! Boots have become highly versatile in their usage. Whether you’re a chukka guy or a Chelsea guy (like me) owning a pair is a must. Boots are great for winter use, pair them with black track pants or blue jeans for the beat results and throw on a black leather jacket for an ensemble that will leave the ladies staring.

  1. Dress Shoes

While I know the term ‘Dress Shoes’ is very broad, for the purpose of this article they mean only one thing – Oxfords! Not Brogues, not wingtips, just classic oxfords. No self-respecting working man can meander through life without a solid pair of oxfords. No matter how good your suit, a bad pair of formal shoes will immediately make you look like an uncultured buffoon. Spend big on this one lads, one good pair will give you a lot of mileage.

Oxfords Paul Smith

  1. Flip Flops

Who doesn’t want to liberate their feet! This one is a hit among the Indian youth. So much better looking than the ugly sandles we all wore growing up, a nice pair of flip flops is a sure hit for a casual day of hanging with the boys at the café. However, one major error that people make is wearing flip flops out and about on formal occasions – It is NOT even remotely formal.

An Indian Man’s Guide to Johnnie Walker

We all love our Johnnie Walker whisky, in fact it’s probably safe to say that anyone who drinks has probably hung out with good old John at least a few times. However, how many of us understand the heritage of this iconic brand? and how many really know the difference between the different kinds of Johnnie Walker?

A brief history of Johnnie Walker

The brand had humble beginnings. Started in 1820 by a young John Walker out of a grocers shop in the small but thriving local town of Kilmarnock in Scotland. John loved whisky and used to stock Single Malts in his shop. But one thing about Single Malts of the time irritated him. They were never all that consistent, meaning the bottle of whiskey you so enjoyed a day ago, could taste completely different the next time you purchased it.

So to solve this problem, John created his own blend of scotch and the rest as they say is history. Below is everything casual drinkers need to know about the different types of Johnnie Walker. Those who want more information can feel free to follow the sources cited at the end of the article.

Red Label

The top selling scotch whiskey from across the world, Red label is the perfect bottle for all those who like to indulge in a post work drink (And don’t want to go broke).  Highly versatile and with universal appeal, it has a bold, characterful flavor that shines through even when mixed. This is probably the only Johnnie Walker blend that you can have with coke without facing the ire of connoisseurs.

Johnnie Walker Red

Black Label

The life of every fancy Indian wedding, Black Label is one of the most renowned Whiskies in the world and often considered better than many of its more expensive counterparts.  Created using only whiskies aged for a minimum of 12 years from the four corners of Scotland, Johnnie Walker Black Label has an unmistakably smooth, deep, complex character. The beautiful hint of smokiness in Black Label is definitely something everyone loves.

Johnnie Walker Black

Double Black

The successor to Black Label, launched to the larger public in 2013. Taking Black label as a blue print and adding heavily peated malts and some aged in deeply charred oak casks. This whisky is a must have for anyone who prefers a smokier whisky. An impressive whisky to have indeed.

Johnnie Walker Double Black

Green Label

Crafted from a palette of Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Island malts and matured for at least 15 years, it delivers all the character of a single malt whisky, but with a greater depth of flavor. Each malt whisky that is blended has been aged for a minimum of 15 years. Arguably the most underrated of the family, Green label is a drink to be enjoyed when looking to unwind on vacation.

Johnnie Walker Green.jpg

Gold Label Reserve

The successor to Gold Label, Gold Label reserve is often looked at as a no age statement version of Gold Label. If you like sweet whisky I feel you will definitely enjoy Gold Label. The best occasion for opening one of these bad boys is on a bachelor party or boys trip. This drink would probably be one of the best scotches in town if it packed a bit more of a punch in the alcohol content section.

Johnnie Walker Gold.jpg

Platinum Label

Any malt that is 18 years of age is going to be amazing and Platinum label is no exception to that rule. A very rich and full bodied whisky, this the perfect gift to a girl’s father. Like with most other Johnnie Walkers using mixers with this one is a big no no and will butcher the exceptional taste of the whisky. What makes it different from a lot of the other whiskies in the family is the spice and heat of the grain whisky.

Johnnie Walker Platinum

Blue Label

Finally down to our last entry in the Johnnie Walker family. There is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said about the top dog in the family. Also known as Max Walker, this whisky looks to recreate the magic of the earliest 19th century blends. According to the Johnnie Walker website “Only one in every ten thousand casks has the elusive quality, character and flavour to deliver the’ remarkable signature taste of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.” So make sure that you save this Whisky for the rarest of occasions.

Johnnie Walker Blue.jpg

So now you’re in the know, go pick up a nice bottle of Johnnie Walker (any color) and examine the taste and enjoy the masterclass blending that makes this whisky so special and perhaps impress your date with your knowledge.

An Indian man’s guide to tipping

Lads, I hate to break it to you but tipping is important. In India, about 40% of the population doesn’t tip & a good 20% probably tip way too much in the hopes of showing off (you know who you are) or getting some kind of special service. The rest are confused about how much of a tip is appropriate. We here at the Indian Man’s Den understand this problem and through research and a few embarrassing tipping experiences bring you our guide to tipping in India.

The appropriate amount is usually about 10% of the bill. This however depends on the service, if there is a fly in your food no tip is probably required but on the other hand a slightly higher tip of 15-20% is appropriate if the service staff have gone out of the way to make your night special.

Delivery Boys

Once again depending on the service the tip should range from anything between 10-20%. No need to tip if he shows up 3 hours late with a cold pizza

Your barber is someone you probably want to keep on your good side (Unless you want to look like a villain from a horror film), and for that reason it’s wise to tip them a slightly higher amount of say 15-25%. This is especially true for low end barbers, who charge 50 to 100 rupees for a haircut. Tip right and you will always have sublime hair.

I know you don’t need to tip you maid, but what I mean here is her bonus. It’s socially expected and probably fair that you give your maid a bonus for holidays like Diwali and Holi. There is no common number for this, but to stay on the safe side you should probably give her about 25-50% of her monthly salary. Way higher than the rest of the list, we know but it’s worth it. Finding a new maid is a hassle.

You know all those nights you decide to go drinking, and just figure “Hey, my driver can wait for me”. Well you kind of need to pay him for that. The tip completely depends on how late you’re going to be. Our recommendation would be a simple Rs 50 to 100 per hour + some money to eat & have chai.

Bellhops need to be tipped, not tipping a bellhop is very much frowned upon. I mean for god sake they do carry massive bags for you! If you’re in India I’d say Rs 50 in a 3 Star or below and Rs 100- 200 in a 4/5 star. There is no need to give more than that, unless you’re a schmuck.

Fell wiser yet. We know parting with money sucks, but tipping is a big part of a lot of service people’s livelihoods. Tipping will also ensure that no one spits in your food. Let us know if you want us to go over tipping for any other professions in the comments section below.

Here is why the relationship between an Indian man and his mother is special

The relationship between a mother and her son is special and I don’t mean in a Freudian way but in a beautiful and mind baffling way. Every boy grows up with this mother being his first friend, companion and guardian (That never changes). Let’s explore this bond a bit further.

There is no psychological or rational way to explain a mother’s undying love for her child. Remember all those nights you were ill and she stayed up through the night to take care of you or when she slogged through the day to help you finish your homework. Mother’s never think twice about spending their time taking care of you. No matter what she might be going through, she will always put your needs first; For example, She will sell her jewelry to pay for you education if need be and makes sure to that you have eaten, even if she hasn’t. Why? Because she believes in and loves you, more than anyone else in the world does. No matter how crazy your dreams seem, she will be the first person to support you and advocate that you are capable of anything!

Mother and son.jpg

This relationship changes as we grow up, move out and get married but the foundation always remains the same. No matter how good our wife cooks or how well we learn to cook, the best food will always be ‘Maa ke haat ka’ (Translation: Made by mother’s hands). She will still worry sick about your diet, career and happiness in general. That is what Mother’s do, they love us from the day they conceive us till the day they depart this plane of existence.

So go give your mother a tight hug and tell her how much she means to you, that will mean more to her than anything, and when she gets old be there for her as she was for you throughout your life. She deserves no less than your love, support and respect because as the old saying goes “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”

Happy Mother’s Day

The end of Playboy as we know it and what it means for men’s magazines

As most of you may have heard, Playboy is on sale for $500 Million, this includes the magazine, cable network, licensing rights and even the Playboy mansion. So if you have a cool half a billion feel free to pick it up and invite me for a kickass party.

The sale of Playboy marks the end of an era, Playboy has been an icon of male culture and lifestyle for the better part of the 20th century. Started in 1953 by Hugh Hefner from his dining table, Playboy has been a mainstay of many men’s lives.

This article is not to report the news its sale nor to discuss Playboy’s legacy, I’m sure enough blogs and papers will cover that. What I would like to discuss is how this signals a change in the way male magazines and portals are viewed. The advent of Playboy led to a seismic shift in how men’s magazine’s operated, while before playboy there were some magazine’s that featured nude people (men & women), these were nudist magazines and often featured less than ideal looking individuals. Playboy on the other hand featured a lot of beautiful models nude, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why they succeeded.

The company is today a licensing juggernaut with deos, jewellery and much much more featuring its iconic logo or name. It has Playboy TV and ofcourse the mansion which has held many legendary Hollywood parties over the years. Despite this Playboy is not doing so well and has seen a drop in revenues in the last decade.

The biggest challenge for Playboy has without a doubt been the advent of internet porn, why would anyone go out and purchase a magazine when they can see all the nude women they want online for free? So Playboy had to change their strategy. In all fairness to them they have done that, As of March 2016 Playboy no longer features nude women. What does this mean?

Well it suggests a welcomed change in what men’s publications do. Till date they all focused majorly on one thing- SEX. I’m not saying that is not important, we ourselves plan to work towards helping men become better at it, respect it and understand the emotions behind it and there are a number of publications that do the same. What will decline however is the focus on “Nude magazines”, more and more publishers are set to focus on advising men, helping men understand their role in an ever changing society and just improving men’s lives.

So don’t fret about the end of Playboy as we know it, there is always porn (Like you didn’t know that) if you want to see women you can never have strip down! Instead welcome the fact that we are entering a new era that will be better. No matter what we will always have the larger than life aspirations that Playboy and Hugh Hefner left us all with, which will probably outlive even Hef himself.

4 Daily habits that can help you lose weight

Summer is here! Now while some guys have been hitting the gym getting their abs ready, others such as well… Myself have been packing on the pounds in winter. So while you should probably be getting your gym shoes out now, here are 7 daily habits that can help you lose weight easily-

  1. Eat slowly: To start this list we want to suggest you don’t stuff your face as fast as possible and instead take your time, it actually takes the brain time to realize it’s full. So you probably will land up over eating without even realizing it if you eat quickly.

  1. Always shop for groceries on a full stomach: This may seem like a weird one but hear us out. If you go grocery shopping on a full stomach you’re bound to land up making a few unhealthy impulse buys (chips, cookies, etc.). So fill up on something healthy like fruits beforehand and then hit the market.

Soft drinks.jpg

  1. Don’t land up drinking your calories: Soft drinks, coffee, tea, alcohol, energy drinks and other beverages are very misleading, because you don’t realize how many calories you drink a day. Substitute your use of these with water. Drinking water will fill up your tummy without the worry of pesky calories.

  1. Eat breakfast: You know how they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day? They are right! Eating breakfast in the morning has been proven to help with weight loss. In fact try repeating the same breakfast for a few days, the results might surprise you.

Let us know in the comments if there are any habits you know that are effective. We will be sure to mention them on our Twitter or add them to this article.

An Indian man’s guide to the difference between cologne and aftershave

Imagine this you’re at the airport, in the duty free area staring at a bunch of designer scents with a sales rep breathing down your throat. The pressure is on you need to pick one quick, do you choose a cologne and use it for going out and shaving or do you buy an aftershave and use it for both? Which is the right answer? None!

The terms aftershave and cologne have been used interchangeably by men and designer brands alike, but the truth is that while both are scented they are used for very different purposes. An aftershave is used after shaving as you might have guessed. They help in fighting infections in any cuts and nicks your blade might cause while shaving. Your skin also loses some oils while shaving, aftershaves can help replenish those. The alcohol it contains (I know what you’re thinking.. no you can’t drink it) will help close skin pores opened by the use of hot water during your shave.

Colognes on the other hand won’t help your post shave routine in any way. It is instead primarily a fragrance created to help you smell better. They are actually often activated by body heat so consider applying them to your skin and different pulse points. Cologne contains a decent amount of perfume oils about 2.5% to 5%. So if you apply cologne in the morning you can be assured it will last for the better part of your day. Even though aftershave contains perfume oils, the amount is very low about 1% to 1.25%. Hence don’t apply it if you’re looking to wow your colleagues with how good you smell, because it will wear off in a few hours.

Remember both cologne and aftershave are very important as long as they are being used for their respective function. Colognes for smell and aftershave to avoid infections and rashes after a good shave.

4 Beard Grooming tips to help Indian men through summer

Summer is upon us. Which means shorts, flip flops and shaving! Wait what? No one likes shaving. Beards have had a renaissance in the last few years. Men like growing them and women love playing with them. The problem is the common myth that a beard is not suitable for the Indian heat. The truth is that beards don’t make you feel warmer and they aren’t a problem if maintained right. We have complied a list of few things you can do this summer to ensure your beard beats the heat:

  • Wash it regularly: In summer months your beard requires the same amount if not more care than the hair on your heard. On hot days your beard is bound to get sweaty and dirty (given the pollution in our country). Consider getting a beard shampoo and using it twice a week. It will do wonders for your beard.

  • Work some Beard oil into the mix: Now washing your beard does have one disadvantage, it dries it up quite a bit, nothing worse than a dried up and hard beard. This is where beard oil comes in. The name pretty much explains it- Oil that you apply to your beard. This will take the dryness right out of your beard. (Pro-tip: Don’t use one with a woody or strong smell in the summer)

  • Keep a spray bottle handy: This is a pretty cool trick I picked up online a couple of months back. Use a spray bottle on your beard on a hot summer day, it will instantly cool you down. This might not be related to grooming your beard but it’s definitely a hack.

  • Consider a quick trim: While shaving your beard because its summer is a bad idea, one should consider trimming it if all the above mentioned activities are too much work. This will give your skin more access to air and will make cleaning it many times easier.

Now that you have these tips handy go on and make us proud, grow a badass summer beard. Feel free to share your beard pictures with us on Twitter, our handle is @indianmansden

What every man can learn from Leonardo DiCaprio

Yessssss! Leo Freaking won an Oscar! To honor the situation I wanted to highlight some things every Indian man can learn from this absolute legend. While I’m sure there are a lot I want to focus on just four (No that’s not because I’m too lazy to right more)

  1. It’s not where you come from that matters: Before Leo became a teen heartthrob, he was the son of parents who divorced when he was at the tender age of 1. After his parents split, Leo stayed with his mother who worked several jobs to put food on the table for him. A few years later this same dude was making millions so next time someone tells you they can’t make it because they grew up poor, tell them to man up.

Leo Money.gif

  1. It’s not always about the money, sometimes you got to do things you love: Despite being one of the most successful movie stars on the planet, Leonardo in his post Titantic career has never focused on doing roles that are populist but rather he did roles that he is passionate about. I mean the guy turned down playing Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars! In an Interview shortly after Titantic he was quoted as saying “I’ll never reach that state of popularity again, and I don’t expect to. It’s not something I’m going to try to achieve either.”

Leo Hmm

  1. It’s important to have some fun in life: Leo is never one to shy away from a good time, whether he is vaping at an award show or at the beach with a bunch of super models, he knows how to get loose. Also before we forget to mention it, didn’t he just have a fling with Rihanna? Ah Leo keep being the Lad king you are

Leo Running.jpg

  1. Never give up, your dream will come true eventually: It took six nominations for Leo to realize his dream of winning an Academy award. He came close on many occasions, such as his role in the much acclaimed Blood Diamond or who his Bro-some (Bro+Awesome) portrayal of the disgraced stock broker Jordan Belford. Despite the whole internet on many occasions doubting it would ever happen, he finally overcame and proved that with dedication your dreams can come true!
